Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

The eyes are the windows to our soul and  make up for a large part of the expression of the human face. They express a range of emotion from happiness to fear. Genetic predisposition and sun exposure are contributing factors to wrinkles, fine lines, sagging and dark circles around the eyes. Over time they can cause changes in expression by creating a tired and/or older looking appearance. Today, there are several remarkable surgical techniques, including eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and brow lift, that have been developed to eliminate many of the problems that everyday living causes.

Blepharoplasty can correct sagging eyelids, pouches beneath the eyes and excess folds around the eyes. This surgical procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat on upper and lower eyelids and is sometimes done in conjunction with other surgical procedures including facelift, brow lift, and forehead lift. Brow and forehead lifts are designed to raise eyebrows and reduce ridges on the forehead, in turn, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Before Blepharoplasty Surgery

Prior to surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate the general health of the patient. A thorough examination of the eyes and face is made to determine the best, most effective surgical approach for you. The amount, type and distribution of excess skin to be removed will be carefully noted. An examination by an ophthalmologist may be recommended. The elimination of drugs containing aspirin may be recommended to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Antibiotics may also be prescribed for a few days leading up to surgery to prevent infection. The areas that the surgeon will be working on will also be carefully noted and photographs will be taken before and after surgery in order to evaluate the final results.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery will be performed in our surgical center. It can be done under local or general anesthesia. Before surgery, premedication is given to relax the patient..

The plastic surgeon will follow natural lines and creases on the face and make very fine incisions from the inner to the outer edge of the eyelid. In certain cases, incisions can be made inside the eyelid. The upper eyelid will be worked on first with the incision made in the fold of the lid. On the lower eyelid, the incision is made directly below the eyelash. Excess fat and skin are removed from the underlying compartments. Small sutures are then used to close the incision and special ointments and dressings will be applied to the patient. The procedure can take from one to two hours, depending upon the extent of the surgery.

Following Blepharoplasty Surgery

Immediately following surgery, there may be some slight bruising and swelling may occur but will subside in a few days. Antibiotics are usually prescribed as well. For your health and for optimal healing, strenuous exercise must be avoided for several weeks following surgery.
